The right fence material depends on what you need it to do and how much upkeep you're willing to take on. In Southwest Florida, the climate narrows the choice quickly. Constant sun, high humidity, salt air near the coast, and summer storms wear fences down faster than in most of the country.
Aluminum and metal privacy panels are the lowest-maintenance option. A powder-coated finish resists rust and fading, the panels don't rot, and a well-set aluminum fence handles wind well. They cost more up front than wood, but they rarely need anything beyond an occasional rinse.
Vinyl is the classic Florida privacy fence. It won't rot, splinter, or need paint, and white vinyl keeps a clean look for years. Its main enemy is mildew and algae on the shaded side, which a periodic cleaning takes care of. Quality matters here, because thin vinyl panels can crack or blow out in high wind.
Wood gives you the most warmth and the lowest starting price, but it asks the most of you in Florida. Expect to clean and restain or repaint every couple of years to keep moisture and sun from breaking it down. If you love the look and don't mind the upkeep, a well-built wood fence is still a great choice.
